Educational information and safety

AquaStead provides general educational information. It is not medical, legal, engineering or professional plumbing advice. We are researchers and writers, not licensed plumbers, engineers, hydrologists or medical professionals.

Water from rainwater tanks, wells, springs, surface water, dehumidifiers and atmospheric water generators can contain harmful germs or chemicals. Do not consume it without proper treatment and testing. Have water tested by a certified laboratory and follow local health authority instructions. Boiling and many filters do not remove chemicals, metals, nitrates or algal toxins.

Always check current local collection rules, codes and permits. Prevent backflow and cross-connections. Use licensed professionals for potable plumbing and electrical work. Ensure supports and bases can carry the weight of full containers. Follow a healthcare provider’s advice for infants, pregnant people, older relatives and anyone immunocompromised or with a medical condition.

Results and references

No particular water yield, water quality, savings or other result is guaranteed. Costs are approximate and depend on your region, equipment and circumstances. Guidance and regulations change: check current local requirements before building or using a system. Citations to authorities and standards do not imply endorsement.

Important safety information. AquaStead: The Home Water Independence Blueprint is for general educational purposes only. It is not medical, legal, engineering or professional plumbing advice. Water from any non-municipal source, including rainwater, wells, springs, surface water, dehumidifiers and atmospheric water generators, may contain harmful germs or chemicals and should not be consumed unless it has been properly treated and tested. Have your water tested by a certified laboratory, and follow the guidance of your local health authority. Boiling and many filters do not remove chemicals, metals, nitrates or algal toxins.

Follow local codes and rules. Rainwater collection, greywater use, wells and plumbing modifications are regulated differently by country, state, province and municipality. Check your local laws, obtain any required permits, and follow applicable building and plumbing codes, including backflow and cross-connection prevention. Use licensed plumbers and electricians for any connection to drinking-water plumbing or electrical systems. Large water containers are extremely heavy. Ensure bases and structures are adequate. If anyone in your household is pregnant, elderly, an infant, immunocompromised or has a medical condition, consult a healthcare provider about drinking water.

Results vary. Water yields, costs and outcomes depend on your climate, rainfall, home, local prices, equipment and effort. Cost figures are approximate ranges for guidance only. We make no guarantee of water yield, water quality, cost savings or any specific result.
